I am doing a boxing training but never sparred yet. I really want to try it. But it seems my trainers don't want me to try it yet. I want to try it soon, because I might have financial problems and might have to quit my training. So I would like to try to spar at least once in my life, just to see how it feels like and how I perform. I mean, I could have a natural talent... I can't know if I don't try.

Welcome to the real world of fighting. I hope you get a chance to try sparring,I doubt you'll be so eager to go back for more. Once you taste your first bodyshot, you may reconsider going back for more. Sparring can be the ultimate ego crusher (in a good way). Good luck, and let us know how it went.

well sounds good man, i think youll love sparring, and as for being hit, i dont mind being hit at all, its all about what kinda person you are. some people like it some dont, youll know when you hit someone and you get hit back ;) you need to have the whole "this dude better really put me away if he wants to win, cause im gonna rock him hard" attitude, and give it what you got, youll have fun it will teach you a LOT about yourself, not to mention really show you where you stand

I finally spared for the first time tonight against my trainer. It lasted 3 rounds. If it was a real bout he would have won that easily... I was barely able to hit him at all. My reach was never long enough to land blows, even if I tried often. He avoided most shots. Also I was hit way too many times. Every time I tried to reduce the reach, he would tag me with something.

Also, I was gassing badly in the third round. Also I was a bit afraid to hit him... Maybe it has to do with my past karate experience. I am accustomed to not have contact when I punch in karate so I'll have to change that. Also I might be lacking agressiveness.

Oddly, I was able to establish ring control and got him in the corner a few times, but I could not really capitalize on that because he ducked most shots.

But overall it was a positive experience. I can't wait to do it again. I will probably improve my skills.

Congrats roger. Really proud of you that's fantastic. Keep patient and work on technique and you'll get better and better.

It's great to here about your first time out. It is frustrating to fight teachers, but that's usually where it starts.

I have the same problem with reach, i'm only 5'7" so i have trouble getting around big jabs. I suggest practicing more horizontal movement instead of just the in and out of range stuff (that doesn't do much for me)

Also, it's hard to build agression so you may want to try and lose your dependence on it. Keep your fighting as a science. Sometimes if you get too wrapped up in the aggression you make a mistake that gets you punched in the face.

Good luck

I think that is very good advice. Aggression is something that you need to learn to utilize while maintaining technique.

I'd say utilize the aggression to keep pressure on your opponent, it will also make you complete most of your attacks (as you don't worry about hurting them) Don't think as aggression as being angry, cause people that fight cause they are pissed look pretty stupid IMO.

Yeah, this is a really good point. If you look at aggression as the willingness to throw a punch as opposed to just being blindly angry.

I try to keep cool and stay focused on the science, but being angry works for some guys. Look at Forrest Griffin, he misses alot of opportunities for submissions, but he still does fine.

Today I did about 10 consecutive rounds of skipping rope. I'll try to get another guy to spar me soon (and hopefully not getting ktfo).

Yesterday I sparred against a teenager about 5 rounds. I was owned... again. He was maybe 5-10 pounds lighter than me. I took several shots. Being hit is not really fun.

Obviously it's not fun being hit... the point is learning to take a hit as well as throw 'em. -_-'
