View Full Version : No Board hype for BJ and Jens?

With this fight less than a week away, I'm surprised there's no chatter about this fight. Am I the only one super pumped for it? I'm way more excited about this fight than any fight on UFC 72 or 71 other than Chuck/Rampage and it's free! Can Jens regain form? Will Baby Jay rebound from back-to-back loses? I think it will be a great fight no matter what, but I'm going with BJ via sub in the 2nd. Who you got?

I'll be rooting for Jens but I think that BJ is not going to let himself lose again to Pulver!
I'll be rooting for Jens.
I think I am anticipating BJ trying to actually make 155 just as much as I am anticipating the fight. Both are a toss up.

I think I have to go with BJ. I don't think it'll be that easy for him but if he takes his conditioning seriously for a change he might pull out the win. He said he'd break Jens arm... we'll see...
I don't like BJ and Jens is cool, so thats where my money is going.

I'm pretty excited to see BJ back at 155 and anxious to see how he'll look...erm...in a totally not gay way I mean.
I will say that Jens seems like a stand up guy and I like him a lot more after the show. I think this season of TUF has done a lot for both fighters popularity and I really hope we see more of both of them regardless of the winner.

I was gonna mention this too. Jens Pulver has been had a rep in the past that he was a douche, but the show has portrayed him as a very likable person who cares about his students.
BJ has come off as arrogant, and a cocky little fatty.
I am going for Jens, but my guts tells me BJ will tap him first rd. :frown:

Just like the stand up guy you saw on TuF 3. That gentleman that goes by the name of Tito Ortiz.

I hear people say that, but I never heard anything bad about Pulver. I always heard he was a stand up guy. Was it the Miletich association, or did I miss something 5 years ago? Where does his negative rep come from? What did he do?

I'm not so sure, but I think some of it may come from how he won the LW belt and then left the UFC. Then again, you never know how much of that is all hype and trash and what not. He probably always has been nice, but I'm just glad that he's had TUF to showcase that fact regardless of what people thought before.
What Gomi said about Tito is a good point, but for some reason Jens seems a little more genuine/less sneaky manipulative than Tito.

I think the first fight BJ (and everyone else at the time) was too leary of Jens stand up...
Now that Jens has been Ko'ed by people that aren't in BJ's class I think Penn will stand and Knock Jens out...
Although I voted and am pulling for Pulver.

I think BJ may be the biggest waste of talent in MMA history. Could you imagine him with just a hint of cardio?
BJ better get the stoppage in rounds 1&2 because if Jens makes it to round 3, a gassed BJ better watch out.

I watched Bad Blood: BJ v. Jens last night on Spike and BJ said he was totally focusing on cardio for this fight. He said he knew Jens would expect him to come in with no gas tank and that's what he'd be training for. Let's see if BJ was telling the truth...

i think its BJ in a Unanimous Decision. I think it will be him schooling Jens for three rounds (BJ catching a few hard shots and shrugging them off), lots of booing from the fans not knwoing what BJ is trying on the ground, but an exciting 3 round decision.

That's the thing. WHat reason to we have to believe otherwise? With Tito, we had 30 years of him being a douche to judge him on. With Jens, there is nothig but a mysterious opinion of him floating around on MMA boards. People say, "Oh well I heard he used to be a dick." Really? Where? What did he do to get that rep? No one seems to know. What we do know is that Jens seems to be a stand-up guy, and I have no reason to believe otherwise then some speculation form message boards that no one can really explain.
In terms of the fight, it really seems unpredicatable. Both guys sufferred disappointing losses in their last fights. Either one of them could come out and put on a horrible performance, and it would not surprise anyone. It's a toss up.
I will be pulling for Jens, but I think BJ will take a UD.

When I read A Fighter's Heart, Sam Sheridan talked about Pulver like he was a stand-up guy. Thing is, everyone has his or her own opinion of a person based on what they've seen or heard. You never really know until you personally know someone.

I read that book as well.
Obviouly you don't know a person until you personally get to know them, and that is kinda my point. This negative opinion of Jens has been floating around for years, and I never understood it. Whenever I ask why people think he is an asshole, no one can give any real reason other than "Oh I heard he was." No one can pinpoint a situation or behavior that they are judging him on. It is all hearsay and speculation.
Someone mentioned Tito, and he gives you a lifetime of situations to judge him on. No one has anything on Jens except that he fights with Miletich, and because Matt Hughes is arrogant, everyone assumes the entire Miletich camp, including Pat, are assholes when that couldn't be further from the truth.
I think it is a combination of the Matt Hughes effect and the fact that Jens left the UFC. That is the best I can come up with.

That's why I don't buy into all this "he's an asshole" hoopla. People say it about Dana and Matt Hughes but we don't know either one of them and most of the time it's people who are so jealous of where they are at in their lives that they make up bull**** to make their own lives a little more exciting.

That may have hit the nail on the head. I don't even care that Hughes comes off arrogant; there aren't many fighters who don't come off a little arrogant, especially when you hold the title that long. I guess some people like Jens come off as unlikeable to others. Personally, I always thought he was alright.
People may not have liked his attitude the first time he and BJ fought but what can you expect. They pretty much wrote him off before the fight started. Either way, I expect a good fight Saturday night. BJ looked like he was in good shape (not as soft) on the Bad Blood show last night and I don't think Jens will be taking this fight lightly either. We shall see...

in all fairness 90% of MFS are assholes. people are just probably playing the odds.
Shamrocked
06-19-2007, 01:15 PM
Having met most of the MFS crew allow me to sort this out:
Pat Miletich - Incredibly gracious, and instantly likable
Tim Sylvia - Gregarious and fun loving
Jens Pulver - Charismatic and excitable
Robbie Lawler - Laid back, but friendly
Rory Markham - Humble and extremely easy to talk to
Jeremy Horn - The Zen master
Matt Hughes - Kind of a dick

I like Jens on the TUF show, although he did seem to overplay the 'BJ disrespects me aspect' almost like he had a little man's comlex. Other than the first show, I'm not sure where BJ disrespected him but somehow Pulver got this idea that BJ thought he was a bad coach, bad fighter, etc. etc.
I disliked Jens prior to the show, but I honestly cannot pinpoint why. Part of it I think came from some interviews I saw him in where he was acting like some kinda wanna be cool M&M rap protege. Now that I think about it thought, that would sort of fit with an insecurity complex.

BTW if this is true, this is great for BJ and his fans but also great for the UFC in general. I really felt an inshape BJ would have beat Hughes and GSP ... and if he can stay at lightweight, Sherk would be good but could you imagine BJ vs. Guida or BJ vs. Griffen. That'd be some sweet action.

that's actually a great question. If he loses, he will have lost 3 straight (and the only 3 fights new UFC fans have ever seen of BJ which will kill his stock) . On top of that it will mean he lost to the top 2 WW and an unranked LW, what more can he do to earn a spot as he will have no purpose in the UFC.
I don't think BJ even has passion for the sport anymore anyway. I could be way off, but he seems lazy and carefree these days. No competitive drive.
That being said, he is likely gonna beat Jens, but I am rooting for Pulver all the way

I can't believe that they would spend their time/money making a name out of him (amongst the casual crowd) via TUF5 only to dump him afterwards. Even Dana would realize after a loss that he's still better than the TUF guys showing up on the cards.Losses to GSP/Hughes is nothing to really be embarrased about ... theyre tough guys and BJ showed he could hold his own with both (minus some gassing).
At worst he'd be relegated to some UFN shows for a while, but unless he really pissed off Dana, I'd think they'd give him some easy wins to climb back up the ladder.

If I were a betting man, which I am :), I'd say that that's what's going to happen. Jens will lose to BJ and then drop down to the FW division in the WEC for an eventual match with Faber. That would be a hype machine because Faber's cleaning house and then they could say that they had to bring down the grizzled vet Jens to be a real challenge.
