What would be your thoughts on a possible match between arguably the two greatest MMA competitors of all time?
DSE has actually been planning this fight for a while and rumors are still running rampant that this fight will take place next year at the PRIDE event in Las Vegas.
Now let's analyze this match. Both are great all around fighters who are not at the peak of their career. A while back Frank Shamrock had his comeback fight against a tomato can, but looked somewhat sloppy in the process. Sakuraba hasn't looked all that great in his past fights also, although he did get the big victory over Randleman. Both fighters' natural weight is around 185 and a battle between the two could potentially be an absolute classic.
Your thoughts?

Remember that thread where they had what if your two favorite fighters where to fight?.... Well, even if Sak isn't on my top 5, but he's my #6 and this kinda falls into that question.
I think it'd be hard to tell who'd win. Both are good at submissions and have good standup. Maybe a replay of Newton vs Sak could be...I don't know. I have lots of respect for Sakuraba even though I'd be rooting for Frank Shamrock. So, my pick would be Frank even though he isn't that active. I'm just more of a fan of him than Sak. However, now, that I think about it, the winner of this fight would be the fans! :wink:

First, if it isn't obvious by now, my heart is always 100% with Sakuraba; know that whenever I'm discussing a potential match-up.
Now, my mind tells me that Frank's stand-up, combined with his elite level of physical fitness, would give him a slight edge. Their grappling and submissions I suspect are equal. But that's just on paper. There are certain aspects of these guy's game that you simply cannot quantify.And so the "on paper" analysis is nothing I would place money on.
But with these two rolling, who knows what crazy out-of-left-field sub might end the match in the blink of an eye. And of course, did I mention - HOLY ****!

I think Frank is too rusty to be able to compete with Sakuraba. If it was his brother ken we were talking about, it would be a different story!

personally I think Saku would win the fight.
Both are about equal in the striking department and there's no doubt this will be a seriously technical fight on the ground. When it comes to submission skills, Frank is great, but Saku is arguably the bets of all time.
That's my reasoning as to why I think Sakuraba would win this fight.

Sak is bum now, who needs DSE to set up fighters for him to win. I don't know what is left in the tank for Frank Shamrock, but I would pick Shamrock to win. That fight w/ Randleman was worse than pro wrestling and anyone that buys into that needs to check themselfs...
Randleman did nothing, He had Sak set up so many times to threw knees you could hear Coleman screaming threw the knees...Kevin was to busy throwing the fight..
When he threw a kick he looked as if he could break Sak's leg and yet he only threw 2 kicks, he threw like 7 punches total and none of them to actually land...horrible display. I now hate Kevin w/ a passion and have no respect for Sak anymore..
Don't even get me started w/ the armbar, I seen better in AJPW. Kevin rolling was completely retarded since all he had to do was stand up and had his hands clinched..
Sak showed me absolutely nothing in the fight. I hope that he fights Baroni at UFC 46....I really really do.
I've always thought that would be my dream match up.
I really can't say who would win, I think it might depend on the rules of the match.Since it wouldn't be for a title shot, they could change the rules to where there wasn't any judges, it could be win by ko, sub, or ref stoppage.
I've never seen Frank get submitted, but I've never seen Sak get submitted, but I havn't seen Frank get Koed, and I have seen Sak get Koed.However, I havn't seen Frank knock people out that much, so this could be one long, technical fight.

how can you lose respect for Sakuraba after this? Saku got pounded and then showed true heart and beautiful techniques by slapping on the armbar. If anything Saku has earned even more of my respect.
If you're trying to suggest that the Saku vs Randleman match was a "work" than you're more ignorant than I thought. Even at Sherdog somebody tried to post theat they it was a work and received about 400 flames as he was the only one that felt that way.

But I racist. All you have to do is watch the fight and think out side the box. Randleman didn't fight, He could have done anything to Sak, he through punches so that they didn't land. His kicks looked as if they would break Sak's leg, he threw 2 of them and quit. On the ground and had Sak in position to reign knees on him, didn't do it. And the "finish" he had his hands clinched and only had to stand up he was in no danger and he rolls? If Rndleman hadn't been around the fight game so long I would say ok, but he has, he knows submission and counters. All he had to do is stand up, if Rampage could slam Sak so could Randleman..
Look at how he put Sak down on suplexes, he didn't go for the kill he was out to do nothing on them, the man didn't even fight. He wasn't breathing hard so he wasn't gassed the man didn't want to do anything because he didn't want to win. Pride put on a big show and Sak had to win and Sak needed a win to maintain any kind of presence. I have seen pro wrestling matches w/ better a finished then that.
I definatly agree about my avatar being shrunk....
So dog....how much money do you think Kevin was paid to swallow all of his pride and get PAID to LOSE against such a worthless bum like Sak?

Frank has never faced a guy as good with submissions as is sakuraba but sakuraba has faced a guy who is just as good as frank. I think Frank would be too caught by surprise to be able to contend.
Gentlemen, please everyone take a deep breath. The insults are getting personal which is the one thing everyone has taken pride in not doing here. If you love or hate fighters, its ok. Let's just not hate each other. Or if we must, just be more civil hating each other. :wink: That said, there isn't a person who posts here regularly that hasn't made a great contribution in ideas and thoughts at one time or another.
I have a different take on Pride and Saku. I don't think they are protecting him, I think they are trying to kill him. They ask him to fight too soon after injuries, they want him on almost every single card and are burning him out. And that 3rd fight against Silva never should have been approved since it was obvious that Silva is like Kryptonite for Sak. Pride must have a life insurance policy on Sak and are trying to kill him. I say all of this in jest.....but just barely. And I don't think Randleman was a work, but simply Kevins deteriorated fight game. I will give Randleman props for fighting so soon after a horrible accident, but his fight game slipped away awhile back (such as it was).
I'll take Sak over Frank just because Im a mark for Sak. Saks skills have slipped due to being worked to death. Franks skills have slipped due to not fighting all that much; he just doesn't seem to have the fire he did 2 years ago or so.

lets not get into the "fix" story for sak/randleman. sak won fair and square. now its sak and silva who didnt deserve to win? or is it because you didnt pick them to win?
as for sak/frank, i think sak would win a dec in a close ground game. sak would win because frank has been way too inactive over the last few years.

this would be an incredible fight. It would bea true toss up as these two are so equally matched in every way. I think Las Vegas would not have any favorites at all for this match.
