I just finished watching that fight on HBO and what a performance! That phillipino guy was awesome and he's the new champ!
I think that guy is easily one of the top 5 best pound-for-pound fighters in the world now.

yeah Barrera got killed. I'm not a huge boxing fan, but I can tell a domination when I see it and that was a HUGE domination!

Damn! I forgot that the fight was tonight and now I know who won. I expected a close fight, but it doesn't sound like it ended up that way.

It wasn't even remotely close. Barrera won the first round and after that it was an annihilation that ended later on when Barrera's corner threw in the towel.

That was a great display of boxing by two unbelievable athletes. That said, I'm sorry but I cannot get excited over two 126 pound guys slugging it out. It that was perhaps the best display of boxing skills I've seen in a long time. But did I enjoy it? Not really. It was like watching an NBA half time show where guys spin the ball on their fingers for minutes and dunk the ball off of trampolines and stuff. It's interesting to watch, but you don't consider them real basketball players. Same thing here. These guys have incredible boxing skill, but I don't think of them as real fighters. In any kind of real fight they'd be tossed aside like a fly.
Sorry, but the lightest weightclass I can watch are the 140lbs (De La Hoya and company).

tony, you usually say some intelligent things, but that last post was dumb as ****. weight classes have been around since boxing began, get used to it. size doesnt mean ****, only the quality of fighters. this fight showcased the two best featherweights out there and they fought their hearts out. and you say you didnt enjoy it? would you have rather seen tyson demolish some no name chump? if so, i'm sad to say you dont know your boxing. you "dont think of them as real fighters"? i bet manny would smack the **** out of you in a "real" fight. at the end you'd be saying "not bad for a fly".
last night pacquoi and barrera put on a brilliant performance. (better than any heavyweight fight in years). with the destruction of barrera, manny just wiped out the featherweight scene and crowned himself king of the feather weights. barrara should'nt rush into a rematch, he'd only get beat again. the next big fight at that weight would be manny pacquoi and juan manuel marquez.

Pac, Erik Morales, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Diego Corales, Frietas, Barrera, Paulie Ayalya, Prince Naseem Hamed and just a select few who fight under 140 and are exciting as hell to watch and who knock people out..
If you won't watch anything less than a buck 40 then you missing out on a lot of great ****!

In my opinion, I think the little guys are more fun to watch than the big guys. There is so much more action and it is so much more faster paced with the little guys as apposed to the slow, sluggish fights the heavyweights constantly have.

The guy that won is like a huge star in the Phillipines. This won must have vaulted him up to legendary or iconic status.

my girlfriend is from the same island in the philipines as manny is. i actually got to watch philipino news (on sattelite) and saw the celebrations they were having for him. he is the biggest thing down there and rightfully deserves it. he was constantly the talk of the news and was very humble in his interviews. i look forward to seeing him fight again in march(thats what his mgmt team said ).

lefty,
I knew my "tossed aside like a fly" comment might ruffle a few feathers. I don't mean to take anything away from their skill as athletes. They are incredible boxers as I said. But c'mon! I bet you your philipino girlfriend is in the same weight class! haha
No disrespect intended. Simply said, when I look into the ring and see these two guys who are a foot shorter than the ref, about the same height as the top rop almost transparent when they stand side ways I say to myself "this isn't for me". Am I missing out on some great fights? Yes, perhaps. I simply cannot appreciate it. For those of you that can all the more power to you.
And on a final note, you said "they'd smack the **** out of me". If it were boxing no doubt you are correct. If it were MMA, no way. I've got a foot and about 100lbs on them.

my philipino girlfriend told me that she weighed exactly the same as manny pacquio! but with her biting skills , i'd have to favour her over manny. i know its tough to take a fighter a foot and a half shorter than the ref seriously, but you have to look at their skills. it's like watching jens pulver or genki sudo fight, what they dont have in size, they make up in skills. unlike most boxing fans,i think the heavyweight boxing scence is just to slow and sloppy, so i took interest in the lower weight and haven't been disapointed yet. as for ruffling my feathers ,forget about it , it happens all the time.

Jens Pulver and Genki Sudo are in the lightweight 155lbs weight class. These guys are just average height, lean muscle and cut to shreads. But the 126lbs featherweights are the size of a petite girl. Any man who weighs 126lbs was unforunately short changed in the God's gene pool (I apologize to anyone on this forum that is that weight :) .
Point is it just doesn't do it for me. I completely agree that the heavyweights are sloppy (in recent boxing history at least). That's why I look most forward to the Welterweight fights 147lbs (Mayorga, Forrest etc).
On a sort of tangent. There are waaaaayyyyy too many weight classes in boxing! 17 weight classes from 105lbs and up! That's a weight class for every 6lbs! And remember there are 3 belts and "several champions" in each weight class. Overall there's like over 30 "champions"! Add this to the list of reasons why I hate boxing!

too many weight classes and too many belts has made boxing look bad. all the old timers (old generation boxing fanatics) complain about these two things constantly. i think a weight class every 10 lbs is fair, but when there is a weight class at 122, 126 and 130, it can be tedious. they (state commisions) claim that numerous weight classes protect the fighters. i think they should do this by having weight ins on the day of the fight, instead of the day before. numerous alphabet groups (wba, wbc, ibf, wbo etc) champions also diminish the prestige of actually being "the champion". most of these sanctioning bodies are form other countries and corruption reigns in them. sanctioning bodies are a business, and they're all there to get a piece of the pie ($$$). the sport of boxing dates back to the late 1800's and is worldwide, so i seriously doubt any positive changes will be made soon.
i've had my nights where i've questioned my faith in this sport more than once. corruption and bad decisons make it a joke at times. i too think mma is the ****, but also cant keep myself away from a good hbo slugfest. for all the bad times you see in boxing, just think about the warriors like gatti/ward, and morales/barrera.
