History shows fad diets
are nothing new

Today its:eat no carbohydrates.Yesterday it was:Eat no fat.Today its South Beach diet.Yesterday it was scarsdale. And once upon a time ,it was consuming molases or apple vinegar and chewing each mouthful of food 50 times.Americans have a long history of eating badly--that is, of jumping from one fad diet to another in a scramble to lose weight or gain health, heres a sample of weight loss history.

1.In the 1860's,london undertaker William Banting was unable to lose weight until he eliminated sugar, starch, root vegatables and pork from his diet. His success in shedding pounds promoted him to promote a low carb high protein style of consumption."Banting"became a weight loss strategy across the atlantic in america, and his best selling book"letter on corpulence"opened the flood gates to diet mass marketing.

2.In the 1830's minister Sylvester Graham railed against overly refined flour and preached vegatarianism and abstinence from alcohol, tea, and coffee. But his real legacy was that coarse flour flat bread we now call Graham crackers.

3.In 1890 diet guru Horance Fletcher insisted one could chew his way to a perfect weight. Each mouthful of food must be chewed into liquid oblivion:"Fletcherizing"meals insured that no more food would be taken in that way was absolutely necessary.Fletcher dubbed "the great masticator"also called for lower meat consumption and higher carbs and vegatable intake.

4.Cereal inavator and health guru John Harvey Kellog took up the cause of fletcherism ,inventing a "chewing song"for patrons at his nutritional sanitarium in battle creek Mich.Kellog also insisted vegatarianism and of course ,his own invented cereals whould bring perfect weight and perfect health.

5.Pehaps the first dietitian to the stars was Gaylord Hauser, who developed a diet plan of natural grains ,vegatables, black strap molases, yogurt, brewers yeast, wheat germ, and powdered skim milk. His book "Look younger,Live longer"was a 1951 hit.

6.In 1938 Dr.George a.Harrop declared skim and bannanas to be a ideal diet food, low in calories while still making people feel full. The subsequent milk-or liquid-diet has since taken various forms, finally producing metrecalin 1959.And metracal begat carnations slender.

7.Dr.Robert Atkins introduced a low carb, high protien diet in 1972.Herman Tarnower pushed for high protien and low calories with his Scarsdale diet in 1978.

8.Low fat was the key to Nathan Pritikins formula in 1979.

9.It was all fruit, all the time in Judy Mazels "BeverlyHills Diet"in 1981.

10.Dean Ornish pushed extreme low-fat with a vegatarian twist in the early 19990's.

11.In the mid 1990's ,Barry Sears "The Zone"plan and other sugar-busting diets started the carb backlash:by the early 2000's ,Atkins was back in favor.

12.Over the decades, certain foods acquire-and lose-near-mystical properties. In recent years it has been cabbage soup(the mainstay in an extremly strict diet that emerged around 1996):grapefruit (enzymes in grapefruit are suppose to attack fat cells):and apple vinegar(romantic poet Lord Byron reportedly lost weight by eating food drenched in vinegar).Like wise certain foods have become public enemy #1.fear of cholesterol sent egg consumption plummeting by one third from 1950 to 1983.Of course,we know these truths to br self-evident:Eat less.Excercise more.Lose weight.
But that seems so un-American.

Man, I was grocery shopping the other day and was running into one fat ass after another, literal on the fat asses part. I could not believe how many of them were in there! And being healthy, it looked like I was zooming in and out, left right, but really that was just average speed for a healthy human being. Now I'm convinced on America's obesity problem.

Regarding the Atkins Diet..."they" say Atkins died of heart disease and was obese (not due to fluid retention, which is normal), but his family is freakishly avoidant of releasing Atkin's medical info upon his death. Makes me wonder.

I'm the eat anything, in moderation type.

It really just depends on who you are when it comes to what you can eat and can't eat. Some have great metabolism and won't gain a pound even if they eat crap 24/7. On the other hand, there are folks who will gain weight no matter what they eat if they don't exercise. It really depends on the individual.

Also appearances can be deceptive -- just because you're skinny, doesn't mean you're healthy. A skinny person might not work out and not have much muscle or cardio. Or maybe they have high cholesterol because they eat a lot of junky food.

Yeah, that's true, metabolism is a big part of it all. And lifestyle. And yeah, skinny doesn't mean healthy or fat necessarily unhealthy. I wasn't really insulting fat people there, just fiesty and amazed. But obesity is a problem. It interferes with my ability to get food fast! That sucks. My metabolism is high and I can't afford to wait all day to eat next.

the problem with what you said is when you have a heartattack at age 40 your going to look back and say i thought my metabolism was great. **** i should have taken care of my self earlier. what people dont understand is when your young you think nothing is going to happen to you but it will all catch up to you sooner or later.

I hadn't heard that. The source for my "heart disease" info is Pita, whom I listen to with a grain of salt, and the rest I've heard and seen on cable news sources. I'm guessing the accepted history is what you've said, then Pita challenged that, journalists tried to dig, and now everything or nothing is settled for everyone, noone, and anybody in between.

I heard about his death having some questionable circumstances also - read in Time magazine, I believe. People are saying that his death certificate has a very high weight listed - his family claims it was due to bloating 'caused by his injuries, others are saying they have witnesses stating he was overweight prior to his death. There's also some questions about the cause of the slip - people making claims that he had very high cholesterol according to his blood tests in the hospital and that the fall may have been the result of him experiencing a heart attack or stroke.

There are obviously people, like PETA and others, who have a vested interest in making Atkins look bad. At the same time his remaining family members also have a vested interest in making him look good so that they insure their inheritance. Its a messed up situation.

Im a personal trainer and what is bad about fad diets like Atkins is that half of the weight loss is from muscle mass. The body fat percentage wont change and that is whats more important than things like the scale which is more for vanity. Proper diet, weight training, and cardio is the best weight loss program.
