View Full Version : My problem with following boxing...

My main issue is that there just isn't enough to follow. Right now my favorite fighter is probably Vitali. But, his last fight was months ago and I haven't heard anything since. When I do hear something then there won't be anything to discuss until the fight. As time goes by (out of sight, out of mind) I just don't care much anymore.

It's a problem with the lack of structure in the boxing world.

Boxing is pretty boring too. It's only swinging, when a fight is good, it's good, but most of the time I have to say I've found it boring.

It's also so damaging, it should be banned :)

actually tony, there's more boxing to follow than any other combat sport in the world.the boxing world is far more intricately structured than you might think. boxing is covered in more countries than any other (combat) sport. you saying you only follow vitali's career, is much like a new mma fan saying he only follows tito's career. considering most top level fighters will only compete twice a year, you may find yourself waiting around for a while just to watch one guy.

the first problem i see, is you follow agruebly the worst division in boxing, the heavy's. the heavy picture's been a mess since the bowe/holyfield days. if you got into some of the more competitive divisions like the jr welters, lightweight, and feathers, you might find it more exciting. unfortunatley , these divisions are'nt marketed no where near as well as tyson and the heavys. you do have to dig around to find info (or listen to me ,dog, and shamrocked:-D ) about some good upcoming fights. just like in mma, sometimes the smaller names can steal the show. the same works for boxing, buys like arturo gatti and (recently) diego corrales have been giving the sport the boost it needs.

my recommendation is to check out fights that some of our posters hype up. also, look into different weight classes, you find a wider aray of talent and styles. if you have interest in the lighter mma divisions (i know you like the welters), try watching boxing's welters (another great division).

when you start making dumb comments like "it should be banned", i'm gonna have to start calling you "lil kim". you either dont know anything about the sweet science, or you're making a big effort to ruffle some feathers.

^^^

He summed it up. Problem Tony has is HBO doesn't air in Canada so I don't know how many of these fights are air time. But boxing is fantastic. Keep and eye on this forum and see if some of the fights getted aired up there and check them out and see if you dig it.

Here is fight schedule I posted on my live journal:

In September:
Cory Spinks 32-2 vs Miguel Angel Gonzalez 50-3-1 (WBC/WBA/IBF 147)
Lamon Brewster 29-2 vs Kali Meehan 29-1 (WBO Hvy)
Miguel Cotto 20-0 vs Kelson Pinto 20-0 (WBO 140)
Antonio Margarito 30-3 vs Daniel Santos 28-2-1 (WBO 154)
Oscar De La Hoya 37-3 vs Bernard Hopkins 44-2-1 (IBF/WBA/WBC/WBO)
Glengoffe Johnson vs Roy Jones, Jr. (IBF 175)
K-1 World Gran Prix Open Round

Some good stuff in September, De La Hoya vs. Hopkins is the biggest fight of the year. K-1 hasn't announced all the match ups yet. But Jerome Le Banner beating the crap out of Frans Botha should be great.

October:
Wladimir Klitschko vs DaVarryl Williamson (Hvy)
Felix Trinidad vs Ricardo Mayorga (160)
Verno Phillip vs Kassim Ouma (IBF 154)
UFC 50: War of 04
Pride 28: High Octane

Tito and Mayorga may get the hype but the Ouma/Philps rematch may end up being the best fight. The UFC has had a real string of great shows, Mezger/Ortiz just isn't a good main event but w/ a solid undercard this will be probably keep the streak of great shows going. Pride 28 gives MMA fans what they have been asking for..no, demanding, Rampage and Silva FOR THE BELT!!!!

November:
Barrera vs. Morales III
Kostya Tszyu vs Sharmba Mitchell (WBC/IBF 140)
John Ruiz vs Andrew Golota (Hvy)
Chris Byrd vs Jameel McCline (Hvy)
Mark Johnson vs Luis Perez (115)
Winky Wright vs Sugar Shane Mosley (WBA 154)
Rumor has is Bushido 5 will also take place.

Three great fights to look forward to, Tszyu/Mitchell II, Barrera/Morales III, Wright/Mosley II. Not bad at all.

December:
Danny Williams vs Vitali Klitschko
UFC Japan
Pride NYE show
K-1 World Gran Prix Final

I would expect a few more names for the Vitali/Williams card. UFC Japan is rumored to have Tito Ortiz vs. Vitor Belfort and Ogawa to face Yoshida at the Pride show. Fedor vs. Nog III is also rumored for the show.

A great year so far for boxing and MMA fans. Pride had a great Heavyweight Gran Prix, the UFC saw Matt Hughes upset, Chuck and Tito finally happened, and UFC 49 just an awesome show---maybe best UFC show ever! We still have some big time fights to come. I think Antonio Tarver will be in a big fight and a few more names like James Toney, Diego Corrales, and Joel Casamayor will likely fight again before year's end.

^^beautiful break down dog. TSN in canada actually airs quite a few of HBO's card (maybe a hour or two delay occasionally).

tony, you now have all the resources (and a great schedule above) to be a die hard fan.

I never follow a tv schedule so anything I catch on the tube is by accident. Funny enough, I see more boxing on Galavision, the Mexican tv channel than on sports channels. They play alot of boxing and soccor, especially on weekends. I don't watch soccor. On the boxing, I never know who these guys are but they have some very entertaining fights. Lots of light, fast guys who bang.

Great responses from both Lefty and Dog.

Don't get me wrong. I do get hyped for the big fights. It was a lot easier when I had free Direct TV. But, I'll still go find a sports bar showing De La Hoya vs. Hopkins for example. I do believe TSN shows everything HBO shows. But it's a week delayed! You can't go a week without hearing what happened in boxing. So it's not the same thing.

I do think Boxing lacks structure. It's true that UFC guys may only fight twice a year. But, there's a continuing story on all the UFC shows.
I'll continue to watch the big fights. But, I will never be a boxing die hard. MMA takes up enough of my life;)
