When I initially saw the trailer for The Purge I immediately assumed that it was simply a gimmicky way to feed genre filmgoer's tireless bloodlust. All show and no substance if you will. Turns out I was only partially right. What could easily have turned out to be a run of the mill horror/thriller is actually a cleverly disguised bit of social commentary. What if society could actually, virtually eliminate violent crime by limiting the public's desire to commit them to one day each year when it was not only legal, but perfectly acceptable (and even encouraged) to act on your murderous impulses? What would be the moral repercussions? How would doing so effect your family dynamic? And who can you really trust if there are no ramifications for killing you?

The Purge tackles these questions head on. Of course at first glance the idea seems ludicrous, but I found myself wondering if I wouldn't be willing to play along if it meant that my family would be safe from harm 364 days out of every year. Would I barricade my family in a secure location and ride the storm out once a year, or would I take it a step further and actually hunt down those who have wronged me, taking full advantage of the opportunity to feed my inner monster? When you really dig into the premise this film had so much potential, and it starts out strong. Unfortunately it becomes apparent relatively quickly that The Purge is nothing more than a pinch of The Running Man mixed with a pretty straightforward ripoff of John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13, only not as effective or entertaining as either. Actually that shouldn't be surprising, as I just realized that director, James DeMonaco has already failed miserably to remake the Carpenter classic with Ethan Hawke nearly eight years ago. It's a good looking film filled with solid actors, but there were just too many things I found implausible (like why would a family with a state of the art security system in a million dollar house not have some sort of panic room inside?). Even still I was really enjoying myself and was completely along for the ride until the absolute head scratcher ending that was so ****ing retarded that it nearly ruins the entire film. In fact for me it did. Based on the ending alone I can't in good conscience recommend this film to anyone, but I could with the following caveat: watch The Purge right up until the point where you think one of the major characters has perished, and then just walk away. Make up your own ending in the car on the way home. If you do that I think you'll find that The Purge is a solid piece of escapism with just a hint of deeper meaning. Sadly if you stay to the closing credits I fear you'll find yourself disappointed as I was (though you will get to hear the news coverage of the morning after, which would've actually made for some really cool footage). All in all The Purge is a mixed bag, but one better opened at home as a rental.

Ironic as it may be after decades of Star Wars vs Star Trek debate, it would certainly appear from watching the latest installment of the Star Trek saga that the future of the Star Wars franchise is in good hands with J.J. Abrams. In his Trek swan song, Abrams once again manages to make a tired mythology cool and exciting. The fantastic cast and crew of the Enterprise return for Into Darkness, and once again they have more lives than a basket of kittens. In fact from the opening James Bondesque action sequence to the credit roll Kirk and crew appear to stare certain death in the eye about every twenty minutes or so. And that's a good thing, as many of the action sequences are spectacular if not completely jaw dropping in their scale. Best of all the plot is pretty straightforward, for as much as I enjoyed the previous reboot it was a bit of a mind f*ck that took more work to decipher than I really wanted to put in.

If the reboot was about Captain James T. Kirk taking the helm of the Starship Enterprise, than this one is about him earning the job. Of course it wouldn't be Kirk (Chris Pine's Kirk anyway) if he didn't somehow manage to screw things up for himself first, and the opening minutes of Into Darkness find Kirk on Commander Pike's sh!t list after breaking protocol to save Spock's life. His stunt costs him the chair, but pays off immeasurably in his relationship with his Vulcan, first officer. His unemployment is short lived however when a mysterious figure, John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch who may or may not be the iconic character, Khan) terrorizes Starfleet, and Pike brings Kirk into the fold. Soon the Enterprise is sent into Klingon territory to track down Harrison at the risk of sparking an all out war between the Klingons and Starfleet. Friends and enemies may not be as they appear, and Kirk must get by with a little help from his friends to solve the obligatory mystery, capture the bad guy and protect his crew. Ultimately to do the latter he must risk his own life, putting his good friend Spock at odds with logic and emotion.

I've never been a huge Star Trek guy, and while the reboot surpassed my expectations Into Darkness was still not a "must see" for me. That said I can't say enough good things about this film. It's a little long, but well paced. The action was fantastic, the stellar crew featuring Pine, Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones McCoy), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), Anton Yelchin (Chekov), Bruce Greenwood (Pike), Cumberbatch (Harrison) and Peter Weller (Marcus) give these characters some emotional depth to go with the iconic lines and mannerisms, and above all else the film delivers the fun and excitement that a good Star Trek movie should. The Star Trek mythology aside, the addition of Neytiri from Avatar, Shaun from Shaun of the Dead, Sylar from Heroes, Judge Dredd and Robocop is a genre fan's wet dream, and though the invocation of those characters can be distracting in the context of watching the film it's an intangible that gives Into Darkness an added element of entertainment. Harrison points out early on that intelligence alone doesn't qualify Spock for the mission they're embarking on. He tells Spock that he can't even break rules, let alone break bones. When Spock's human emotions get the best of his Vulcan logic he unleashes his rage (and his considerable "retard strength") on an unsuspecting foe. It's the kind of moment that Abrams pulls out at precisely the right time, and one of the many reasons he was the right man for the job of bringing this franchise back to life. Having done so, I'm now anxiously awaiting watching him do it again with another, stories sci-fi franchise in a galaxy far, far away....
Georges St. Pierre is going Hollywood ... again.

Fresh off the set of the upcoming "Captain America" sequel titled "Winter Soldier" (details here) as "Baltroc the Leaper," the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight Champion has landed another high-profile role as the voice of "Art" in the French-Canadian language version of Pixar's animated "Monsters University," according to TheStar.com.

"Monsters University," which is the "college-days prequel" to "Monsters Inc." of 2001 is described (via IMDb.com) as:

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn't always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn't stand each other. 'Monsters University' unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

In the English version on "Monsters University," "Art" -- a shaggy purple fratboy who is a mysterious monster with a questionable background and the strangest member of the Oozma Kappa fraternity -- is voiced by Charlie Day, who is joined by heavy hitters such as Billy Crystal, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi, among others.

It's unclear who will join "Rush" behind the Canadian scenes of "Monsters University," which is set for release in the United States on July 21, 2013, but it certainly won't be Johny Hendricks, his most likely next opponent inside the Octagon.

"Bigg Rigg" has suggested that St. Pierre will be too busy with his acting aspirations and not focused on his mixed martial arts (MMA) career if and when the 170-pound standouts finally collide. "Rush" responded, saying that he was "already training" his recent movie roles have "nothing to to with the end of my [MMA] career."

For now.

What's your favorite/best low budget movie?

I've been watching a bunch of terrible new movies lately, and finally got my copy of Pusher back from my friend, so I popped it in and watched in one sitting.

I don't know what the budget for this film was, but it was incredibly low. They don't even have lighting. I'm sure it was shot on one camera. Many of the actors weren't even actors.

The film is a cult classic and has already been remade twice (India, UK).

It launched the careers of Nicholas Winding Refn, Kim Bodnia, Mads Mikkelsen and Zlatko Buric. Most of you will never have heard of Bodnia or Buric, but Bodnia, who had at least made a film before, went on to become Denmark's biggest actor, and Buric ... damn, what a presence.

The initial version I watched had one of the most sublime endings I've ever seen. Unfortunately, the DVD copy I have added less than a minute at the end that fukked it up and was completely unnecessary.

I know Shammy crapped on this when he first saw it, but then kind of enjoyed the next 2 a little more each. To me, this is the best. Buric is amazing, as he is in Pusher 3. Bodnia is indescribably good. His facial nuances are beyond great.

The film has a lot of shortcomings, mostly due to budget, and some of the dialogue is a bit lacking, but it has a gritty, realistic feel that is often uncomfortable.

So ... what's a low budget movie you've seen that still blows away most blockbusters being made today?

Director Jeff Nichols follows up his 2011 critical darling, Take Shelter, with Mud, the tale of two young boys who get crossed up with a fugitive and make a pact to help him elude capture and reunite with his love. With Mud, Nichols gives us a bit of a contemporary take on the Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn characters. The film weaves Southern, river town Americana into a coming of age story like Winter's Bone meets Stand By Me. On the surface Mud appears to be about the mystery surrounding the fugitive drifter and his relationship with the boys, but ultimately it's a story about love and trust - the importance and the consequence of believing in it.

Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) are best friends on a quest to discover an abandoned boat rumored to be stuck in a tree on a small island along the Mississippi River. After finding the boat they realize that someone has been living in it, and soon it's revealed that the person in question is Mud (Matthew McConaughey). Mud might have an endless supply of cigarettes but he's short on food, and he makes a deal with the boys that if they bring him some he'll leave them the boat as soon as he meets the person he's waiting for. Turns out Mud did a bad thing and he's being hunted by even worse people, but he's not leaving without his love, Juniper (a pre-drunken arrest, Reese Witherspoon doing her best, white trash, People of Wal-mart). Things are rough at home for Ellis. His parents are on the verge of divorce and he has feelings for a girl who may not reciprocate. Ellis needs love to work if for no other reason than to bear proof that it's possible. He believes that Mud did wrong for the right reasons and he vows to help him reunite with Juniper, so with Neck's help the two do what they can. Soon however it becomes clear that the authorities (and worse) are zeroing in on Mud and his escape won't be easy. It's decided that the best course of action is to get the boat out of the tree and into the water, so Mud can make his escape with Juniper.

McConaughey dazzles in this film, but the real star of Mud is Sheridan. Ellis is a very well written character. Fiercely independent and capable, Ellis is at once vulnerable and fearless (I think he punches about a dozen people of varying size in this film). I related to Ellis in a way I rarely have to any film character. I felt as if I knew this kid, and I wanted desperately for Ellis "win" on some level. Lofland plays Neckbone like River Phoenix's Chris Chambers from Stand By Me. A street tough orphan, Neckbone is raised by his Uncle Galen (Michael Shannon). He's loyal like an old dog, and wherever Ellis goes, Neckbone is sure to follow. Nichols rounds out his cast with great actors like Sam Sheridan and Joe Don Baker in pivotal roles, and even though it clocks in at 2 hours and 10 minutes he does a masterful job of pacing the film as there's a lot of ground to cover. Ultimately Ellis and Mud's friendship is tested, but when things finally come to a head (in a fairly action filled climax) everyone's true character is revealed.

Mud is a moving and entertaining story. It's well crafted and filled with great performances. It's also one of the best films I've seen so far this year.
Girls Against Boys is a slickly produced, entertaining revenge flick with plenty of "oh shi+!" moments. The movie is ultimately rather pointless, with no real social commentary or plot twist, but still a blast to watch. The two lead actresses offer plenty of eye candy too. Has anyone else seen this movie. Thoughts?
I'm not doing it again, so I'll just say this - go see Pain & Gain. It's fantastic and The Rock is absolutely brilliant in it. It's like an Elmore Leonard novel on steroids, only it's based on a true story!

Gonna throw a lazy review at you for three reasons. 1). I've got other sh!t to do. 2). It would be difficult to go into much detail on the plot of this movie without dropping some substantial spoilers. 3). To be perfectly honest I really should watch this one again, because I'm still not entirely sure I have it all straight in my head.

Trance is the latest from Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Slumdog Millionaire), and I'm happy to say it's a bit more old school Boyle (Trainspotting, Shallow Grave) than he's given us in recent years. Here's the Cliff Notes version: Simon (James McAvoy) works for a auction house where a famous painting is stolen. Franck (Vincent Cassel) wants that painting and he thinks that Simon knows where it is. When traditional torture proves ineffective, Franck takes Simon to see a hypnotherapist, Elizabeth (Rosario Dawson) to help him unlock it's location. From there things get weird...fast. Part heist film, part triply, drug movie (without the drugs), Trance is many things, but it's certainly not boring or uninteresting. There are twists and double crosses, sex and violence, and apparently the key to unlocking the location of the all important painting is SPOILER ALERT...Rosario Dawson's shaved beaver (a scene that alone warrants the purchase of the Blu-ray). The ending is a bit of a head scratcher. I thought that several things had to conveniently fall into place for everything to work out the way that it did and I'm not sure I was thrilled with how it all turned out, but I can't say that I wasn't entertained by the ride.

The shot at 1:14 of this trailer kick so much ass!
