Default Recent DVD Purchase/Rental Review Thread

Ok, I figured since we had a review thread for CD purchases that I would make one for DVD purchases/rentals. There is always movies that you don't catch in theaters, yet you watch them once they hit DVD, as well as buying movies that maybe no one has talked about in recent memory. So here we go:

    Rentals:

10,000 BC - Bad reviews from the critics and the lack of interest from much of the public kept me from checking this out when it was in theaters. It looked interesting but I was never sold on it. I decided I would check it out now that it was available for rent. It was actually better than I thought it was going to be. Granted, I wasn't expecting much and it actually sat on top of my DVD player for a while before I got around to watching it but it was worth the rental. While it is not the most captivating storyline, it is interesting and will keep you watching. This along with some decent action throughout the movie makes it worth checking out. 7/10

    Purchases:

Lately I have been trying to build up a little collection of movies so I went to Best Buy last week and made some purchases of some movies that I liked in the recent past. I picked up The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan, and Black Hawk Down all for $6.99 each. I also picked up The Illusionist since it was on sale and I had never seen it before. A few of my friends recommended it. While it wasn't as good as The Prestige(which I bought as well), it didn't disappoint. Ed Norton really made the movie for me, and Jessica Beil is hot. Well that is all for me right now, lets see what you guys come up with.

I recently picked up Machine Girl which is a Japanese action gore flick with a wiggy plot. Girl seeks revenge on gang for killing her brother or something and they cut off her arm. She gets a machine gun grafted on and goes back for more revenge. Supposed to be pretty good with wild effects. Haven't watched it yet. The same people who made this one have released Tokyo Gore Police which is said to be completely over the top with gore effects and the Japanese unique style if film making insanity.

I also got the new 3 dvd Ric Flair career collection just to have.

machine girl is a lot of fun, you'll probably really like it, if you dont have incredibly high standards...

recently i rented botched. its a kinda slapstick dark comedy crossbread with a gorror flick. got stephen dorf, which aint much of a selling point, but if you enjoy strange genre combo's its worth a look.

essentially dorf is a crook who messes up a diamond hiest. to appease his russian mob boss he has to go to russia and take an iron cross that belonged to ivan the terrible... soon he finds himself and others running away from a dancing, blade swinging, and incredibly psychotic ivan the terrible...

my love of bad horror movies also made me check out grizzley park, which is hillariously bad. an crazy murderer escapes jail and torments kids as they do community service at a forrest preserve... about halfway through the movie, the writer seemingly got bored and decided a bear would show up and eat the convict, and the rest of the movie would be the bear chasing the teens... its phuckin histarical.

and only because i usually take every chance to promote recent movies that i love, 13 tzametti is one of the best movies ive seen out of france since truffaut... i dont wanna say much cause the plot kinda unfolds as the movie progresses, but bassically its about poor, non-parisian france. a guy, tzametti, does whatever he can to make money. while repairing a roof, his employer dies. a letter gets sent to his dead employer with a big job offer. needing money, tzametti takes the letter and assumes his employers identity. then, the **** hits the preverbial fan.

10,000 BC got it but haven't watched it yet.
Also... Just ordered on Amazon Get Smart The Complete Series.

I'm an old geezer and kinda like the older stuff - movies from 30s to 60s James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Olivia DeHavilland to name a few.

Then there's my SiFi / horror collection from the 40s to the 60s, I've collected over 400 of these. Way back when nuclear testing was going on they made many SiFi movies to do with nuclear testing.

I like to collect TV shows as well... Star Trek,Lost in Space, Outer Limits, Voyage to the bottom of the sea, Twilight zone, The time tunnel, Gun smoke, Danial Boone, Rawhide, Big Vally, Perry Mason, Kojak, Wonder Woman, Baretta, Hercules, Xena, Adam 12, Police Squad, Dragnet, Columbo, Rockford files Dallas, Dick Tracy, The Shield, Magnum PI, The Hulk, Walking Tall, The Untouchables, SWAT, The fugitive, Alian nation, Charlie's Angels, Kung Fu, Boston Legal, Airwolf, The lone gunmen and Emergency. There's more but that's all I remember without referencing my collection.
TV shows are my favorite to collect.

I have about 1800 DVD movies and TV shows.

Someone on the board recommended "The signal" instead of the M.Night movie. It was pretty entertaining in a blood and guts with a twist of "shaun of the dead" type humor.Last night I watched "the Condemned" with Stone cold.Definately the best WWE movie (for what it is worth)not quite as good as the Ice-T movie that was pretty similiar.I didnt care for all the man on woman violence and I think 2 rapes or attempted rapes was a bit much and a tad uncomfortable.Still on my to watch list is "District B13".

10,000 BC was one of the very worst movies I have ever seen.

10,000 BC seems to have no plot and only a vehicle for the latest cgi effects? Is that how it is or am I off base? Go rent any old Ray Harryhausen flick for stop motion effects that covered this genre decades ago.

Grizzly Park reminds me of the old creature exploitation flick Grizzly from the 70s. It came in on the heels of Jaws when they were trying to do every kind of nature gone amok via a big animal flick they could, but its really not to bad. I'd like to get it on dvd.
Basic story of a big damn grizzly bear eating folks in a national park and the hunt for it. The pivotal gore scene, not that bad but cool, is the hunter on horseback coming across the bear by surprise and it rears up and knocks the horses head clean off with one swipe of a paw, then turns its attention to the hunter.

Even the effects were unimpressive in 10,000 B.C. The only decent Cave Man movie I have ever seen was Quest For Fire. 10,000 B.C. was utter crap and pure fiction without even the slightest connection to historic fact.

I picked up No Country for Old Men on DVD and watched it last night. Great movie. I loved the whole feel it gave off. The detail of all the little sounds in each scene was absolutely perfect. Couldn't of been casted better either. All the actors played their roles perfect. I really enjoed it. And Chiguh's silenced shotgun-thing was bad ass.
