good for you man. Bulldogs right. you need to grapple and get use to rolling around. don't worry about technigue right now. you need to get use to being put into position that don't feel comfortable.

Yeah after a year and some months I've done nothing but getting my ass kicked. I don't often go to the beginners class, only did the first 3 weeks, so I regularly roll with purple belts and brown belts. I should probably have attended the beginners class regularly but it is at a time where I'm usually at school. I still haven't had a match yet, but plan on going to a tournament in January.

I feel the same way, but you can easily toss blue into the ranks I have little shot at. The one thing I'll say though, is that my cardio has grown exponentially since I've started grappling. Now if my technique could just do the same, I'd be happy.

Cardio and body strenght is where I've experienced the most noticable gain as well. And you're right, blue belts are also in the category of people that regularly tool me when we roll.

Since this is becoming the de facto BJJ training update thread, I though I'd vent a bit.

We had a Judo BB/BJJ brown belt guest instructor come in today and he showed us some basic Judo throws (ouchi gari/ko uchi gari/tani otoshi). Nothing I haven't seen before, but to be honest, I'm not thrilled wih my Judo progress, so it was nice to be have the extra practice. I thought tonight would be a great chance to maybe practice the stand up a bit during sparring. After all, we spent the whole practice working on takedows. I figured it might put people in the mood to practice takedowns during sparrig.

Anyways, I went went 0-4 when asking sparring partners if they wanted to start standing, including a blue and a purple belt. I could really use the stand up practice, especially fighting BJJer's with the bent over stance and leg grabs. Kind of frustrating that so many are reluctant to start on the feet. I'm not sure if it's a fear thing or people just want to practice the ground techniques they've been shown during practice and see the stand up as eating into the 'real' BJJ.

So that's my vent for the night. Thoughts anybody? How often do you guys work takedowns in your BJJ school?

I've worked takedowns maybe 4-5 times. When we're sparring we always start on the knees and everybody are fine with that. I would like to learn some takedowns, right now I just shoot and hope to get the result I'm looking for. I'm a big guy so I can get a take down pretty often, but the higher belts just sweep me instantly. I don't know what to do once I get my first match. Think I'll start attending the freestyle wrestling classes that my gym offers.
