I've already given up on the season. Just looking forward to college basketball and March Madness.

Still no deal and now the players are going to try and disband their union. Is disbanding the union so they can break ranks and cut a deal with the owners??

If they disband the union - this season is completely finished and probably next season too.

What baffles me is that no matter WHAT deal they get now - the current crop of players will never regain the salaries they've lost and the future generation of players will only gain a drop in the bucket.

They'll disband and try to win their way in court.

This means the season is over. We'll lose a season, the players will finally agree to a worse deal next year. The whole thing is stupid, there is no way there is not enough money for both sides to make a good chunk of change. Much of this is ego, and the most egotistical players in the world of sports are basketball players. They're the best payed, the get the best perks and ahve for years been the most spoiled and coddled. I don't want to side with the owners cause they are as mucht o blame, but screw the NBA and the players that caused this mess in the first place.

If they disband and go to court - chances are that next season (or at least a good chunk of it) will be lost too.

They would have to recertify and accept a crappy deal to get basketball by next season - assuming that deal is still in place.

I'm 100% with the owners on this (aside from my hatred of Stern - who is a creep and a slimeball). The players got an incredible deal last time around and the owners didn't care much because the economy was booming and everyone was paying money into the NBA. With the economy hurting now, the owners are feeling 100% of that sting while the players are still fat and happy. The owners are wanting something a little more balanced and fair - but they're just as much to blame because they're taking it to a hardline extreme too (i.e. instead of just doing a 49.5/50.5 split and saying the players won - they'd rather play hardball).

In reality - if something were to be "fair" - the players would look at taking pay cuts and playing for something a bit more realistic - with a date to "review" the CBA in the future. Will never happen though.

ESPN reporting that they have reached a handshake agreement that should start the season on Christmas. Good news but I wonder how many fans have they lost already?

Whooooo! Basketball is back. I was convinced the season was done. I agree with dhk, they didn't lose many fans. I think major damage would have been done had they cancelled the season, or even if the lockout went as long as the last one. But losing a month and ahalf of games in a season that's a month too long anyway is no big deal. The only real harm is that the players and owners both look like greedy douchebag assholes.
