Yeah that's not what the quote says, even if it might be what the retard who wrote the article is trying to insinuate. Metallica is set for life (as they should be).

I read it as they are saying that it used to be you released an album, toured, took a couple years off (which I read as "time to write new material") before you started the cycle again. Sounds like he was just lamenting that they can't do that like they were planning to in their older years and have money keep coming in, not that they are running low on cash. This link cut out the end to Hammett's quote during the actual interview (so I read) which was cut from the magazine copy:
"We`ve been a live band, we`ve had to get out there and play, play, play...But nowadays that was the area we wanted to kind of lay back on a little bit, and kind of enjoy our families and things. But, you know, it is what it is, and we can't change that.""

Bands don't generate the kind of revenue as they used to through album sales, particularly bands with huge financial backing from record companies. I'd guess that's probably what they were referring to. They probably wanted to just record music, phase out touring, and continue on like that XTC-style, but it can't be done that way now.

They were talking about the incredible amount of money it's going to take to finance the retarded, 3D movie they're making and how they've got to basically tour to support this project. At least that was what I took from the hard copy that I read in the oversized Rolling Stone.

No one is going to want to watch a 3d film about Metallica. Not even Metallica fans.

I think you'd be surprised. Released to a worldwide audience, if they get a few million people to watch it (and let's be honest, GLEE 3D grossed $18.5M worldwide with no real fanbase outside of the US), and then a half a million people worldwide to buy the DVD for stocking stuffers at $19.99, they'll cover their costs easily. When you have the means, why not do stuff that interests you? I don't hate on them for it. If I had cash I'd be trying all sorts of new things, even if I lose a little bit of money in the process.

I'm not sure I can think of a better example of a band that has gone out of their way to alienate their fan-base on such a consistent basis. Sure bands mature and change - but what has happened to Metallica is beyond compare. Please over publicise more whining and complaining when your peers are really suffering.
The bus should have fell on Lars. I wouldn't accept anything less than $50 to sit through a 3d full length Metallica performance.

I'm no Metallica fan or anything, but I caught Lars' interview on Howard Stern's show not too long ago. Stern asked him about rumors of being broke, and Lars said they were fine but didn't have much accessible cash because he poured millions of dollars out of his own pocket into the 3D film. I believe he quoted 20 million. Stern, who has always been buddy buddy with Lars, went nuts and asked him why in the hell he would do that when they could have found someone else to finance the project. Lars gave a halfhearted response about wanting to have complete control over the project.

I've disliked Metallica ever since I watched Some Kind Of Monster. Kirk seems alright but Lars and James are douchebags.
