    Default Shadiness at the Mundials!

    Kind of funny story:

    2012 Mundials: False Countdown Trick Lets DJ Jackson Clinch Championship

    The score was 2-2 with one advantage each and time was ticking down. The crowd around the nearly empty mats was entirely focused on Beneil Dariush and De'Alonzio (DJ) Jackson, as they grappled for the brown belt middleweight championship. First, Beneil worked an omoplata sweep to get two points and an advantage, then DJ swept back from the half guard and struggled to pass. This match was destined to go down to the wire and perhaps to a referee's decision. DJ got points for a pass very late into the match and was up 4-2.

    The crowd chanted the countdown as time was running out. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! When the 1 sounded in the air, Beneil stopped grappling. He stood up and began to compose himself.

    What he didn't know is that the crowd chanting was a congregation of Team Lloyd Irvin grapplers and supporters there to coach his opponent, DJ Jackson. There was actually ten more seconds left on the clock. DJ had nothing to do with the false countdown, but readily took advantage of it with a takedown and a pass into side control. Bam! Two points for the takedown and three points for the pass into side control on an unresisting and confused Beneil.

    That sneaky trick allowed DJ to seize his first gold medal in his first try at brown belt in a major tournament. In future editions of the Mundials, there may be rules or sanctions against teams for pulling underhanded tactics like this, but for now, that gold medal is Jackson's to keep.

    Story has been updated. Via Bloody Elbow-

    EDIT: The play by play I was working from - as the BudoVideos feed went offline at a crucial moment - failed to note that DJ got two points late into the match and was actually up 4-2 when the false countdown occurred. My apologies to Jackson, his team and to Deb Blythe for giving us the correct action.
    It's been confirmed elsewhere that DJ was up prior to the false count.

    With that said, I'll never understand doing something like that. That's certainly not how I'd ever like to win a match. Just following the local grappling/MMA scene, I don't think I've ever had a positive experience with Lloyd Irvin's team. His school is about 10 mins for where I live, but I really can see myself ever going there, despite the obvious talent there. I just dont want to associate myself with **** like this.

    If that was their intention that's pretty bad sportsmanship and douchy of them to do. It's kinda funny also but I would be pissed if it happened to me, and who would want to win like that? Only a pussy would.
    So far I'm happy with the results there. A female teammate of mine won the purple belt division and Alexander Trans, also a teammate, is fighting in the ultra heavyweight division.

    Andris Brunovskis, a friend and former training partner, was recruited by LI. Kid is an absolute beast and a good person. I know Andris values what LI has done for him, but yeah, the whole countdown thing really reflects badly in the school.

    Is lloyd Irvin a legit bb. I went to his website, and it looks like a Anthony Robbins seminar. I was waiting to see video of his students walking on coals. His privates are 1500 to 2500 an hour!! Are people dumb enough to pay this. Seems like a hustler to me. Walks like a duck, talks like a duck....

    Yes, he's a VERY legit BB. His students regularly compete on the highest level and do quite well. I don't think anyone has questioned his ability or his credentials. It's the general attitude of his schools (especially the marketing, as you pointed out) that many people question. He's one of those love him or hate him guys.
