    Default Thoughts on Erick Silva

Guy has been impressive in the UFC, but it wasn't until his fight last Friday that he convinced me he will be a top contender in a short time. Guy is an awesome addition to ww. Seeing him deal with the pressure of brenneman was a nice step in his game I hadn't seen. I think he is a tough fight for anyone at 170.

    Thoughts?

Erick Silva is the next big thing in the UFC welterweight division. Athletic, explosive, good looking, this guy's got what it takes to beat anyone at 170 and then get dominated by St-Pierre.

    Go Erick Silva!

One of the things about him that made me an instant fan is his aggression. He comes out super aggressive but he doesn't fight with his head up his ass. I loved that we got to see him use his kicks just more this time, he had some great spinning back kicks. So yeah, I also think he could become a force in the division and that's very welcome.

That was a good fight. Silva showed excellent aggression and effective striking in his first two fights. In this fight he was able to display solid grappling skills. Silva was able to deal with being put on his back by a top level wrestler, and he also demonstrated he can work aggressively for a submission (as opposed to say an opportunistic submission on a downed opponent).

The only thing he has not shown within the UFC is the kind of cardio needed to go into the later rounds. He does have 4 decisions on his record (3 wins, one loss), but I would like to see how well he holds up in the later rounds (ie, how much does is aggression drop off) against a worthy opponent who can keep up with him early. Someone like Rick Story is probably next, but I would like to see him go against Diego Sanchez (Durable, can grapple, aggressive even in the later rounds).

I also wasn't sold on him until his last fight. He's showing all the signs of having the tools to be a top fighter right now. We still need to see him gradually move up in competition, but he looks like a future contender for sure.

I've been a fan of his for years. I love Jungle Fights, and he had probably 10 fights there. I thought he might have some trouble with Brenneman, since you never quite know how the Brazilian guys will deal with wrestlers, but he smoked him. Glad to see him making it big now.

How are you watching those fights? Even before my cable provider decided to drop HDNet, I do not recall seeing them run any Jungle fight events.

I have my ways and means. Unfortunately Jungle Fights rarely exist in decent quality (especially events past the first 10 or so) due to the absence of professional cappers in Brazil, so when I get to see them, they're in glorious VHS-quality rips. I love Jungle Fights though. A recent one, 38, had a sweet one-night 8-man tournament.

Given that Rory is currently 4-1 in the UFC (compared to 2-1 for Erick Silva) and headlining a co-main against BJ Penn, I think Erick Silva has a few fights between now and then before that fight gets signed.

Having said that, I would love to see Silva vs Rory.
