Default Cormier's final strikeforce fight in Sept..probably will be shadowboxing for 5 rounds

    mmafighting

Jul 14, 2012 - The end is near for Daniel Cormier's Strikeforce experience.

Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion and two-time Olympian Cormier will end his Strikeforce tenure this September 29th, the promotion announced Saturday evening during the Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy Showtime broadcast.

No venue or opponent has been named.

Despite winning the Grand Prix and competing through the dissolution of the Strikeforce heavyweight division, Cormier's contract - as well as tournament finals opponent Josh Barnett - requires one final bout before he's allowed to move to the UFC.

Cormier last competed in May where he won the heavyweight tournament, besting Barnett in a five round unanimous decision. Cormier reportedly injured his right hand in that victory and required surgery, but according to tonight's announcement will be healed and ready to compete in a little over two months.

I'm pretty interested in this solely to see who they bring in. Are they gonna use someone from the UFC or...?

As washed up as Tim is now, I can't even think of a better opponent not under contract elsewhere.

Tim Sylvia vs a Strikeforce champ?

I don't think so. Tim has higher standards.

Two words... Abe Wagner!!! Hey, he did beat Tim in under 40 seconds. Alternate: Darrill "Titties" Schoonover.

Hell, it was a decent fight the first time, why not just do Cormier/Barnett II and blow off both contracts at the same time?

EDIT: With the added bonus that if Barnett pulls of the win, you've immediately got a grudge match series to introduce them to the UFC.

Except Dana doesn't want Barnett at this point.

I'm not so sure. He's an entertaining heavyweight who can promote fights and compete at a high level (compete mind you, not necessarily win), and in the shallow UFC HW division I think that makes him a fighter worth having. That being said, I suspect if there's a barrier it's going to be Barnett's end, and it's going to look something like this: $$$.
