    I think you give the Republican Guard too much credit. They were better trained and armed than the regular army, but we're not talking Navy SEALs level. Their entire existence was basically due to the fact that Saddam couldn't trust his own (Shia dominated) military. They were only 'elite' when compared to the rest of the Iraqi army; certainly not by international standards.
