I've been sidelined from BJJ for a few months due to injury, workload, and family; but I noticed on Facebook that a friend of mine who has been on Llyod's competition team for a few years came back. Looks like he bailed in the middle of the night with all those other fighters.

I know a bit of this guy's situation, and it had to be tough to go from a sponsored training situation to basically nothing back here. Obviously it was the right choice to leave, but hard nonetheless I suppose.

How's the injury, Telerion? Shoulder, right?

Yes, shoulder. I've been too busy to make another appointment to get an MRI. It doesn't bother me, but then I don't do anything with it either. I can tell it's still injured, and if I go roll hard I'll probably be right back in pain again.

I also picked up some sort of upper hamstring problem (piriformis I suspect) from driving to UVA every couple weeks. I've only got two more trips, and then the teaching job will be over so I'm hoping just rest time and stretching will fix it.

Have you healed up? Or still returning to activity too soon?

Holy ****, man. I remember you saying you were making a long drive to teach some classes, bu I had no idea you were driving from Cleveland to Charlottesville. I hope they're making it worth your while.

I posted an update on my shoulder in the BJJ thread, but it sounds like I'm in a similar situation to you. Shoulder feels great during every day activities. I can even do almost all my weight lifting exercises with little to no pain. Last time I felt this good though, I went back and as soon a I tried to do a shoulder roll/zenpo kaiten, I felt intense pain in my shoulder. I basically decided I'm going to take a good six weeks of so off and if it hurts after this one last hiatus, I'll schedule another Doctor's appointment. I'm still hoping I just have a nasty strain in my rotator cuff that will resolve itself if I just give it time. Still, the possibility of a tear and surgery/quitting grappling scares the **** out of me.

Yeah, it is a long trip. This last time I gave a seminar as well so my employer paid. Naturally, I flew down, but surprisingly it doesn't save much time or energy. It's about a 7.5-8hr drive one way, but the flight with cabs to and from airport, standing in security, waiting at the gate, etc, ended up being a 6 hr trip. The actual airtime is pretty short so you can't really rest or get any work done. Plus it costs a lot more to fly to CHO (UVA pays me a flat salary; I cover expenses). The pay was quite high for a single clas (it's a core first-year PhD course, and they were really desperate). I did it partly for the money, but also for the prestige on my CV. Teaching a fundamental PhD course at a top 30 program is not an opportunity that I'm likely to get often, if ever again.

Taking extra time for your injury is definitely wise. I've been itching to get back, especially since I'm pretty sure the bad timing of my hiatus cost me my purple belt. I know firsthand belt colors don't make you any better, but sitting on the side while your peers (and even those you're more knowledgeable than) get promoted smarts just a little.

Yeah, I hear you man. One of my best friends in Judo is getting ready to test for brown. We started together and moved up the ranks together, so it's pretty tough to not only not be able to test, but not even be able to help him prepare. As for my BJJ......how much progress can you get when you average about one hour every three weeks? Ugh....
