Default Demetrious Johnson vs John Moraga headlines TUF 17 Finale (canceled)

    mmajunkie

Just about two weeks after his successful first title defense, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has his next assignment.

Johnson (17-2-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC) will face John Moraga (12-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in April at the TUF 17 Finale in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Review-Journal on Monday first reported the news, and UFC officials later confirmed the matchup.

Sources close to the Johnson camp also confirmed the fight to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). The event takes place at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and airs on FX, FUEL TV and Facebook.

"Mighty Mouse" most recently appeared at UFC on FOX 6, where he survived a tough second round against John Dodson to recover and cruise to a unanimous decision in the event's headliner.

The 26-year-old Johnson, who trains out of AMC Pankration, became the UFC's first flyweight champion at UFC 152, where he won a split decision against Joseph Benavidez in the unofficial final of a four-man tournament created to crown the division's first titleholder.

The champ is on pace to fight four times this year.

Moraga gets the title shot on the strength of two straight wins in the octagon. He debuted this past August with a first-round TKO of Ulysses Gomez, then followed up with a third-round submission of Chris Cariaso at UFC 155 that won him a $65,000 performance bonus.

Including his UFC wins, Moraga, a product of Arizona Combat Sports, boasts a seven-fight win streak.

Gotta give it up to Mighty Mouse. He's banging good and is also consistently fighting. Props to him.

I think he scores a KO here. He outclasses Moraga imo.

A guy goes from 2 prelims (one of which was a Facebook prelim) to a title shot? At least they recognize that nobody would pay for this fight. And, I guess he's not the least qualified guy getting a title shot at the moment either. It's free so whatever, but I'm not particularly excited or interested.

^ I think they're trying to stretch out Benavidez's relevancy for as long as possible. They'll let him win another fight and then give him the title shot. Because the thing is, if he fights Mighty Mouse again and loses, he's pretty much in limbo despite arguably being the #2 guy in the division.

As for Moraga, I love the kid and think he's one of the brightest up-and-comers in the entire UFC, but he's being thrown into this title shot too early. The casual fan knows nothing about him, and I'd imagine even a lot of hardcore fans are unaware of him; his two fights have been on Fuel and Facebook. They should have given him a main card bout on a PPV or Fox event.

Yeah, I'm inclined to think Moraga wasn't their first choice, but good on him for taking the fight.

Benavidez was absolutely devastated after that loss to Mighty Mouse. It probably caused him to completely rethink his fight game, so I completely understand where he would want to test himself out more before taking another crack at Johnson.

I thought Darren Uyenoyama would be the next to fight wonder what he has to do to get a crack at the belt?

I doubt that losing to Mighty Mouse caused Benavidez to go the Miguel Torres route of 'throw away everything that made me successful and radically change my approach to fighting because I lost one fight'. However, I do think that he recognizes that he seriously needs to work on a few things if he wants to have a convincing shot of defeating Mighty Mouse. I do not know if he is working on counter striking Mighty Mouse as Mighty Mouse moves in, or if he is working on his wrestling in order to put Mighty Mouse on his ass the way Ian McCall did in the first Mighty Mouse vs Uncle Creepy fight.

In either case, Benavidez recognizes that he needs to adapt his approach if he wants to walk out of a rematch with a belt.

    END COMMUNICATION
